My track “Red Horse” took me to the American west, envisioning the future of a young Black girl in the 1850s I saw a photograph of at the Arts Bank. She was wearing a white dress and a white hat, and based on the photo was working as a nanny for a white family. I imagined a man on a red horse entering her life as she stepped away from that job, and the idea of freedom to write her own narrative.

While writing “He Will Follow You With His Eyes,” I was drawn to the idea of femininity as a performance, natural born Black women being sold these products to be more feminine in these ‘50s and ‘60s advertisements, and the politics surrounding Black beauty that is still a topic today.
